What will you learn?

In the Course Introduction you will learn the specific reasons that being a skilled reader is so crucial in our world today. We’ll talk about the importance of play-based learning and I’ll give you a four-step plan you can use to teach your child anything.

In Module One you will learn why reading aloud to your child is so important, and how to choose wonderful books to share with your preschooler. I will teach you practical strategies for making reading aloud an integral part of your family’s life. You will discover how to make your family’s read aloud times as engaging and powerful as possible, and how to use them to teach your child the most important part of reading – comprehension.

In Module Two we do a deep dive into phonological awareness and pull out the often overlooked but crucial set of phonemic awareness skills that your child must have in place in order for phonics instruction to be effective. I will equip you with a set of fun, flexible, classic activities that you can use to develop, deepen and solidify your child’s phonemic awareness and readiness for phonics instruction.

In Module Three you will discover how to adapt those same activities and use them to help your child develop deep letter knowledge, which combined with phonemic awareness, provides the rock solid foundation your child needs in order to benefit from phonics instruction and learn to decode easily and well. When you add in the comprehension strategies I cover in module one, you will have provided your child with the pre-reading skills they need in order to benefit from the direct reading instruction that kindergarten brings.

FAQ

Here are answers to some frequently asked questions:

I'm not a teacher. Will I be able to use this course to help my child?

Yes. You are your child’s first, best, and most important teacher! This course isn’t about teaching your child – it’s about adding activities to your family life that develop reading readiness in the most natural way possible.

Do the activities you demonstrate cost a lot of money?

Every game and activity I share in this course is provided as a convenient download you can print at home. I do share some of my favorite ready-made materials, but purchasing these is NOT essential to building your child’s reading readiness.

Will my child be bored by academics, so early?

The great thing about reading readiness is that just about everything we do to support it is engaging and fun. Do keep activities short and sweet though, allowing perhaps 3-5 minutes to play a game. Much of what you learn in this course can be integrated into everyday conversation and interaction.

My preschooler is so WIGGLY and can’t sit still for long at all. Can your course help us?

Remember to keep activities short and sweet. Plus, here’s one of my best pieces of advice – let kids stand during activities and games and wiggle as much as they need to. Sitting still to learn is over-rated!  As stated above, much of what you learn in this course can be integrated into everyday conversations and interactions and that really helps you to keep your own child engaged and learning.
